Singing should be fun you should pick songs that you want to sing. Your tutor should guide you towards songs that your voice can handle. If you start with a big song too quickly it can make you feel you can't sing when really it's the wrong choice of song  and you're out of your range.

Reguardless of what style you want to sing the way you approach your songs are the same, to get the best results from your voice vocal tuition will help with this tremendously.  When I started  singing in bands at 18 (many years ago) I found singing on stage was tiring, once this happens your breath is also effected giving you no support to finish the song's not nice.  Then at 20 I decided to have singing lessons which taught me how to approach a song, keep control of my voice and my breathing. I still sang in bands the singing lessons were a godsend helping me control my voice and last out to the end of every gig making my time on stage much more enjoyable.
